Immerse yourself in the dynamic, rugged, and intoxicatingly colourful, vibrating land of Eastern Milos.
Our off-road adventure begins at the bustling port of Adamas, heading south. Leaving behind the stunning gulf—the second largest in the Mediterranean—we take a dirt road for about 3 km, passing Milos Airport to reach the Kalamos Volcano Crater, which has been inactive for the past 90,000 years. At the summit of Agia Kyriaki Hill, we witness the mesmerizing fumaroles of Kalamos, where volcanic gases, mainly sulphur, continue to escape into the atmosphere.
After exploring this remarkable site, we continue to the Sulphur Mines in the Paliorema area, once a central hub for sulphur extraction. This now-abandoned site, active from around 1860 until its abrupt closure in 1958, remains a hauntingly beautiful ghost-like attraction, offering insight into the island’s industrial past.
Our journey then takes us to the Aggeria Mine, one of Europe’s largest and deepest bentonite mines. Along the way, we pass the striking Monastery of Agioi Anargyroi, a whitewashed structure exemplifying traditional Cycladic architecture.
Our final destination is Kastanas Beach, a hidden gem on the northeastern coast of Milos. Far from villages and main roads, this secluded beach offers peace and relaxation. It features coarse sand mixed with multicoloured pebbles, emerald-green waters, and striking red, orange, and purple rock formations. The seabed is rocky, making sea shoes advisable. As there are no facilities, visitors should bring all essentials, including plenty of water.
