We will start with a panoramic drive towards the caves of Papafragas, a cluster of deep-sea inlets and sea caves, and Phylakopi, a settlement next to Papafragas, dating back to the Neolithic Period (9000 to 4000 BC), and remained an active settlement until 1000 BC. We stand at a small plateau, admiring the geo formations and ex-pirate’s hideout location, witnessing the remains of the fortification wall of the Mycenean era, 1400BC. At the same time, our tour guide explains the obsidian city’s history. (the tour is not entering Phylakopi, as it is not open to the public)
Then, we head towards Sarakiniko, a beach with its lunar landscape, the outcome of volcanic eruptions 1.5 million years ago. This beautiful, moon-like spot is one of the island’s many geological wonders, perhaps one of Greece’s most photographed places. We’ll walk down the beach to experience this one-of-a-kind location and take stunning photos. Our guide will provide information about the unique geological formations that give Sarakiniko its otherworldly appearance.
Our next stop is the ruins of the Ancient City of Melos. During our short archaeological walk, we visit a specific section of the city, including the site of the discovery of Venus de Milos, now residing in the Louvre Museum in Paris, and the Roman theater, with a lovely bay view (Those who do not wish to follow the complete visit to the theater – a couple of stairs and an uneven surface involved – can still admire its floor plan from a vantage point above it.)
The tour’s extension (optional) by one hour includes a visit to the Catacombs. Our guide always provides an informative overview of this significant Early Christian monument’s history.
Next, we visit Plaka, a charming Cycladic village with cobblestone streets and narrow alleys. Perched on a hilltop (a ten-minute uphill path guides us to the heart of the town), it is a sight to behold, featuring classic white stone houses adorned with vibrant bougainvillea flowers.
As we wander through the village, we are captivated by its traditional architecture and the stunning sea views from the churchyard. (Optional: refreshment, shopping, and restroom break). Our tour leader will guide us on a ten-minute descent back to the bus parking area. From there, a twenty-minute drive will return us to our hotel.
