Plaka is the capital village of Milos, perched on a gentle hilltop. As you wander uphill through its narrow, unpaved cobblestone streets and alleys, lined with colorful bougainvillea and geraniums and dotted with acacia, lemon, and olive trees, you’ll feel transported to a small corner of paradise. Pots filled with fragrant herbs adorn the yards, enhancing the village’s enchanting atmosphere.
Crowning the summit are the ruins of the Venetian-era Kastro (Castle), accompanied by whitewashed chapels that cling to its slopes. This lofty vantage point offers a glimpse into the island’s past through Plaka’s typical Cycladic architecture, much of it dating back to the early 19th century.
A must-visit spot in Plaka is the large “balcony,” where a floor of marble paving stones and black-and-white pebble mosaics exemplifies classic island design. Here stands the Cathedral of Panagia Korfiatissa (Virgin Mary on the Peak), built around 1810. Inside, you’ll find valuable icons and ecclesiastical treasures, the most notable of which is a magnificent gilded Epitaphios.
From the balcony of Korfiatissa, you’ll marvel at the breathtaking sunset and sweeping views of the wide gulf—the second largest in the Mediterranean—surrounded by striking volcanic formations. Boats glide across the deep blue sea, and in the distance, the deserted island of Antimilos (also known as Erimomilos) appears to float on the horizon.
In addition to the panoramic views, Plaka offers plenty of memorable experiences:
